Vacancy: Museum Manager At Fleetwood Museum Trust

Location: Fleetwood Lancashire UK

Closing date: 29th March 2018

Job Type: Full Time

Salary: £27,000 – £30,000

Contract Type: Fixed Term 3 years with 6 months probationary period.

The collection is housed in a Grade II listed building, built in1838 as the original Customs House for the then, new town of Fleetwood. Situated at the mouth of the River Wyre, it affords fantastic views of the Wyre Estuary, Morecambe Bay and the Cumbrian Hills beyond, and is already an established visitor attraction. Fleetwood Museum Trust, an independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), established in 2016, is currently responsible for operating front of house activities.

We are in the process of transferring the governance of the museum from the Lancashire County Council to the Trust. This agreement will include the loan of the collection, which illustrates the history of Fleetwood and the surrounding area. We are developing a long term strategy to ensure that we retain our present Accreditation status and can continue to play an active part in the local community.

The collection includes fine and decorative arts but mainly focuses on the town’s social and maritime heritage. It includes two historic fishing vessels, both listed on the National Historic Ships Register, and one in the National Historic Fleet.

Our vision is to be a place of outstanding historical significance: educating the young, reminding the old, and inspiring future generations to investigate their heritage. We are an important part of our local community and attract over 14,000 visitors a year.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for the right person to be involved, from the outset, in our new organisation.

Job purpose

We are looking for a positive, dynamic Museum Manager to take a strong operational and strategic lead to ensure the organisation meets its objectives and is financially sustainable. Alongside strong operational and collections management, developing a marketing and income generation strategy, will be a key part of this role. We need a strong communicator and negotiator who is able to spot new opportunities and develop partnerships to ensure long-term success. Proven experience of income generation within the museums sector is desirable.

Fleetwood Museum is an Accredited Museum and maintaining this status is essential.  The successful candidate needs to have an excellent understanding of collections management and care together with, museum best practice and must be able to demonstrate the necessary skills and experience.

We have strong community support and our ambitions are high, so we are looking for someone who can work with the Board to ensure a successful future and realise our aims of making the museum more accessible to all. We want to be a place where visitors can come together to learn, engage and belong.

If you are passionate about local heritage, have a minimum of 3 years experience in museum operational management and a proven track record of collections care, management and access, then we look forward to hearing from you.
